Australian T20 Cricket Team

aus

The Australian Team has been one of the top teams in the world for decades now, dominating the shorter formats of the game. The Australians are yet to capture the ICC World T20 trophy but have consistently been making the finals and semifinals. Their best effort came in 2010 where they came out on the losing side against England in the Final. Nevertheless Australia is considered one of the favorites for the upcoming ICC World T20 2018 and is thought to be by many the team to beat.

The Australian Cricket Team has had an inconsistent 2016 with a poor showing against India on home turf, however they were able to bounce back well against South Africa and New Zealand. They currently have a 4-6 record in 2016.

The main concern for Australia is picking their final XI that takes the field, with so many fantastic players to choose from it is near impossible to predict the best combination of players. In particular the Australian selectors are having an issue with finding the right opening batsmen combination, with Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Aaron Finch and Shane Watson all warranting a place at the top. If they can work out their batting line up issues and get some of their spinners some experience on the big stage Australia should be a force to reckon with come 2018.

Probable Squad
David Warner(c), James Faulkner, John Hastings, Aaron Finch, Travis Head, Moises Henriques, Chris Lynn, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Matthew Wade(wk), Peter Nevill(wk), Scott Boland

Key Australian Players

David Warner

David Warner has become a stalwart in the Australian batting line up. Few batsmen in the world can keep up a strike rate like the explosive Warner with such ease and consistency. Warner seems to always be in great nick with extremely rare droughts in run making, this makes him a great bet for over and under runs for the tournament, also taking into consideration the Aussies almost always make it deep into international events.

Being an opening batsman gives Warner the advantage of taking the first crack at the opposition. Players of Warner’s caliber will have problem picking apart the bowlers of lesser sides, leaving little for batsmen who come lower down the order. Since the location of the ICC World T20 2018 hasn’t been set in stone, Warner would be an ideal candidate for most runs in the tournament as he is accustomed to batting on both bounce friendly Australian Wickets and the slower and lower subcontinental wickets.

Aaron Finch

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
28 28 974 156 38.96 150.0 1 6

Aaron Finch is another big hitting left hander from the top order of the Australian batting line up. Finch has been in good form in the past couple of years, securing the number 2 spot on the ICC World T20 rankings, with a rating of 803. Finch is known for being an extremely dependable top order batsman that has the ability to take advantage of the crisp new cricket ball.
Finch may bat in the opening position or come in one down if Usman Khawaja, another left handed opener, is in the playing eleven. In either position Finch promises to deliver some match winning innings and help Australia go deep in the tournament.
As with most opening batsmen of the top teams in the world, expect Finch to make a tonne of runs in the ICC World T20 2018 and perhaps even leave with the most runs in the tournament.

Mitchell Starc

T20I Bowling Record

Arguably the best bowler on offer in the world today, the relatively young Mitchell Starc is one to watch in the World T20 2018. Starc bowls fiery left arm fast swingers which can hit speed of up to 155 kmph on a good day. He has been terrorizing batsmen for a fair few years now and continues to keep up lofty standards despite injuries. Starc has been successful on both sub continental pitches as well as the seam friendly pitches of England, Australia and South Africa. His ability to bowl top notch yorkers at the death overs of a T20 innings has given the Australian team a real formidable wicket taking option at the back end of the innings. With the ability to swing the new ball and bowl fiery yorkers at the death, look for Starc to be at the top of the wickets column in the T20 World Cup 2018.

Starc was the most valuable player at the ICC 2015 World ODI Cup and it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if he took home the prize for the T20 World Cup as well.

Mitch Marsh is a real X-factor on the Australian team. Although relatively young and unknown, the talent and ability that Marsh has displayed in the few games he has played at the international level has shown us all what he is capable of given the opportunity. The Australian All Rounder has been bowling phenomenally in all forms of the game as of late, and had really taken to closing out innings with a bang in both T20 and ODI cricket. Winner of multiple Man of the Match awards, Marsh is the type of player that can take a game away from the other team with both bat and ball.

If Marsh’s form continues expect him to take some early wickets with the new ball and at the back of the innings as well as make some serious contributions in the lower middle order with the bat, maybe even taking his team home for a win on some occasions.

Indian T20 Cricket Team

ind

The Indian Cricket Team is packed with stars and should be considered a favorite for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. The Indian team currently resides in the second spot of the ICC T20 rankings with a rating of 126. The team has been in fantastic form in 2016 with a record of 15-5-1. They were able to sweep the Australians in Australia, for the very first time. The Indian team did very well in the 2016 ICC World T20 making it to the Semifinals where they fell to eventual Champions, the West Indies.

The Indian T20 Squad is jam packed with talent. The upcoming batch of Indian Cricketers are coming with a large amount of T20 experience due to domestic tournaments such as the IPL. With exposure to the best of the best these young talents are finding it easier to adjust to the international stage than their counterparts on other teams.

With the retirement of MS Dhoni, look for now Captain Rohit Sharma to lead an aggressive Indian team into battle at the 2018 ICC World T20. With the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina making up the top order of the Indian batting line up there should be no target out of reach for the Indians.

The only issues that may plague the Indian team are the lack of great spinning options and the bouncy pitches of the possible home of the ICC T20 World Cup 2018, South Africa. The Indian batsmen have a history of being uneasy with the bouncing ball; this World Cup could be the change of that.

Look for India to make at least the semi-finals and possibly win it all if they can find the right combination.

Probable Squad
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Jaspreet Bumrah, R. Ashwin, Stuart Binny, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav, MS Dhoni(c)

Virat Kohli

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
45 41 1657 90* 57.13 135.4 0 16

Virat Kohli is only 29 years old but already considered an all-time great. He is currently the top ranked batsmen in T20 international cricket and continues to pour on the runs in all formats of the game. Kohli can either open the innings or come one down if need be– his ability to take over matches and bend oppositions to his will is well documented. Kohli is especially effective in chasing down targets; his ability to pace the innings to perfection is unmatched.

As in all tournaments look for Virat Kohli at the top of the run getters table. He is almost guaranteed to play some match winning innings over the course of a world cup, and is a great bet for Man of the Match any time India is playing. His ability to make quick runs in any conditions, even the bouncy seam friendly pitches of South Africa ensure that no matter where the World Cup ends up he will be capable of dominating the game.
Look for Kohli to lead India into the semifinals at the very least.

Rohit Sharma

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
62 55 1364 106 31.72 129.4 1 11

The talent of Rohit Sharma has never been in question on the cricket field. The only complaint one could make about Sharma is his loss of concentration during the earlier years in his career. Sharma has since however, managed to rectify this problem becoming one of the top T20 batsmen in the Indian team as well as the world.

Sharma opens the batting for Team India and has the ability to time the new ball extremely well. A couple faults in his technique leave him vulnerable to LBW and being caught behind, but Rohit has been better in recent times in correcting his weaknesses. Like his top order teammates, Sharma is a match winner. If he gets going he is incredibly hard to stop and can single handedly win a game for India on any given day.

Look for Sharma to dominate the bowling line ups of lesser teams, especially ones that do not posses any fast bowlers that can take advantage of any flaws in his technique.

R. Ashwin

T20I Bowling Record

Mat Inns Wkts BBI Ave Econ SR
45 45 52 4/8 22.19 6.91 19.2

Ravichandran Ashwin is India’s ace spin bowler and arguably their best wicket taking option. Ashwin came into the cricketing scene in India relatively late into his twenties but has developed into one of India’s most prized bowling options. Ashwin is especially effective in T20 cricket where his variations have caught many batsmen off guard. Ashwin is currently ranked number 7 on the ICC T20 bowlers rankings with a rating of 670.

Look for Ashwin to get some extra bounce on South African pitches with his height which could lead to some key wickets of top order batsmen. Ashwin’s competitive spirit is another factor that makes him a nightmare to contend with, his relentless style of bowling has the potential to unnerve batsmen and make them make mistakes they normally wouldn’t
Ashwin will likely not be leading in wickets at a South African based T20 World Cup, however his contribution and ability to take timely wickets will be extremely important for India’s overall chances in the tournament.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

T20I Bowling Record

Mat Inns Wkts BBI Ave Econ SR
16 16 16 3/9 23.81 6.68 21.3

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a young and extremely impressive fast bowler with the unique ability to swing the ball both ways. An absolute headache for batsmen to deal with, Kumar possesses the scalps of many of the world’s top batsmen. Kumar is also handy in the death overs at the back of the innings, with his ability to bowl accurate yorkers and deceptive slower deliveries.

Kumar is part of the new Indian breed of fast bowler with the ability to get his pace up to 145 kmph. This brick pace mixed with accuracy and the ability to swing it both ways gives Kumar great opportunities to get top order batsmen out. Kumar will do especially well on the seam friendly South African wickets, the extra bounce found on SA soil will also provide Kumar with another threat in his already deadly arsenal.

Kumar has the potential to be among the highest wicket takers in the tournament; keep a close eye on him in the next few years– he’s definitely one to look out for.

West Indian T20 Cricket Team

wi

T20 cricket is by far the most successful format of international cricket for the West Indian Cricket Team. It almost seems like they were made for the game, with their big hitting batsmen and wily spin bowlers. The West Indies is the only team to have won more than one ICC T20 World title, with their wins in both 2014 and 2016.
The 2016 season has been a fantastic one for the West Indies with their only loss in the T20 World Cup to Afghanistan. The West Indian team seems to have found the perfect blend of all rounders to ensure they bat very deep. With Brathwaite coming as low as 8 down the West Indian batting line up seems to be a never ending list of big hitters.

While the West Indians rarely go into a tournament as favorites, the 2018 T20 World Cup seems different. They will definitely be considered one of the favorites due to their play in the past T20 tournaments and the depth in their squad.

The West Indies team can be unpredictable, however there is no reason to doubt that they can win it all again in South Africa or wherever they decide to hold the ICC World T20 2018. Even if they don’t win they are sure to entertain with the some of the biggest hitters in the game such as Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard.

West Indians have also been able to piece together a rather handy bowling line up with Samuel Badree opening at the front as the Number one ranked bowler in T20 cricket. All rounders such as Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard add value with both bat and ball making the West Indian team especially well rounded.
Look for the West Indians to make the Finals—or if not on song, not make it past the group stage.

Probable Squad
Chris Gayle, Samuel Badree, Carlos Brathwaite(c), Dwayne Bravo, Andre Fletcher, Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, James Holder, Sunil Narine, Marlon Samuels, Miguel Cummins

Key West Indian Players

Chris Gayle

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
50 47 1519 117 35.32 145.4 2 13

Chris Gayle is well known for his ability to rip apart bowling line ups with his power hitting. His accomplishments are mind blowing with multiple hundreds off fewer than 50 balls. The left handed opener is probably the most dangerous batsmen in the world if he gets going, with the potential to win any game from any position. When facing the West Indies the first thing on every players mind is seeing the back of Chris Gayle, the match really starts after he has been dismissed.

Gayle has been out of nick in the recent past, this however doesn’t make him any less of a threat in future fixtures as all it takes is one good innings to get him back in business. Gayle had a reasonable IPL, playing a few match winning innings and helping his team reach the final.

Gayle has continually been amongst the highest run getters in international cricket leagues such as the IPL and BPL. While he is yet to string along these kinds of performances in international cricket he has the potential to be the Player at the Tournament at any major T20 event.

Look for Gayle to have a bit of a rough time in South Africa with the ball bouncing more than he likes it to be.

Dwayne Bravo is the heart and soul of the West Indian team, with his prowess with bat and ball and his theatrics on and off the field. Bravo has the uncanny knack of picking up wickets when he’s bowling and the ability to find the boundary when finishing off an innings for West Indies. Bravo much like Gayle is reaching the latter part of his international career but seems to be aging like fine wine; Bravo recently took the most wickets in the IPL and was part of the winning Sunriser Hyderabad team which took home the tournament.

Bravo will continue to take wickets, especially with his deceptive slower balls in the death overs of the innings. With a little extra bounce in South Africa he should be able to continue to be the X-factor on the West Indian team.

Look for Bravo to be a taking a whole bunch of wickets at the ICC World T20 2018 as well as play some match winning cameos in the lower order.

Samuel Badree

T20I Bowling Record

Mat Inns Wkts BBI Ave Econ SR
30 30 40 4/15 15.50 5.53 16.8

Samuel Badree is ranked as the number one bowler in T20 cricket at the moment. The reason for his success is his accuracy. His ability to bowl wicket to wicket in the while opening the bowling as a spinner has caught many batsmen off guard. Badree isn’t a huge spinner of the ball but he does have a deceptive ‘other one’ that has fooled many a batsman. Badree’s economy and ability to take wickets is quite astonishing when you take into consideration that he bowls in the powerplay overs of the innings.

No batsman has seemed comfortable against Badree in the first few overs—Badree is simply not someone you would want to contend with when first stepping to the crease. The fact that he bowls all 4 of his allotted overs straight up at the start of the innings is also a great plus for his bowling stats.

Badree’s recipe for success is simple and thus very repeatable. Expect Badree to continue to have success and keep his slot at the top of the ICC blowing leader board.

Andre Russell is another one of the many top all rounders on the West Indian team. Russell is very good with the ball but is better known for his destructive batting down the order. Although Russell bats low at the 6 or something even the number 7 spot, he has the capability to turn a game on its head in just a matter of a few deliveries.

Russell like many of his West Indian teammates is terrific in the field. His ability to use his athleticism to cover huge chunks of turf and pull off stunning catches is coming to be an every match occurrence.

Andre Russell was recently the Man of the Tournament in the IPL and has been at the top of his game for some time now. Look for him to continue on in the ICC World T20 2018 and put on a show like only he can.

The South African T20 Team

sa

There is no question that on paper the South African cricket team goes into almost every single tournament they play in as the favorites. However, a long line of choking in key moments has left fans unsure of the team’s ability in the pressure matches. The T20 team seems to glide through the league stage of the tournaments but falls short in the semi and quarterfinals. There isn’t really an explanation for the lack of championships for South Africa, especially when names such as De Villiers, Amla, Steyn and Tahir are among the players in the ranks.

Although the past may suggest otherwise, betting on South Africa is not a hopeless cause. They have a lot to prove but their batting and bowling line ups are top class with almost every player in the playing XI capable of winning a match on their own.
The South African team’s recent form has been wayward with five wins and four losses in 2016. It should be noted however that most of the losses can up against a tough Aussie and West Indian team.

The one huge advantage South Africa may have this T20 World Cup is home field. South Africa is known for being a great home team and has bowlers and batsmen who really enjoy the bouncy conditions. With the ball coming onto the bat just how he likes it, expect AB De Villiers to lead the way as captain of the team.

Look for South Africa to go far in the ICC World T20 2018 and perhaps with a change of fortune even bring home the trophy this time.

Probable Squad

AB De Villiers is one of the all time greats of cricket. He has revolutionized the way the game is played with his innovative shot selection and will forever be remembered as one of the most dominant batsmen that has played the game.

De Villiers has been around for a while now and captained the South African team for a significant part of his career. He’s known as a player who can do almost anything, even wicket keep when needed. De Villiers is nicknamed ‘Mr. 360’ due to his ability to flay the cricket ball to any part of the ground.

All eyes will once again be on De Villiers when the ICC World T20 tournament comes by in 2018. His form as of late in T20I’s has not been up to his lofty standards, however like most legends of the game he is capable of making huge contributions and changing his fortune in just one innings.

AB will always be a threat to score the most runs in a tournament. His position coming in two down however, stops him from facing the maximum number of deliveries he could. If the South African team management changes this in the near future, allowing him to open the innings AB may able to greatly improve his numbers.

Quinton De Kock

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
29 29 742 52 29.68 128.3 0 1

Quinton De Kock is still a youngster but this left handed wicket keeper batsmen is one of the top prospects for South African cricket in the future. His talent cannot be doubted, with a number of match winning innings in a short but illustrious career. De Kock has the gift of timing and the temperament of a player much more experienced than him, giving him the ability to convert starts into large T20 scores.

De Kock opens the innings for South Africa and thus has the advantage of facing more deliveries than other batsmen. His ability to hit the gaps during the powerplay also makes him the ideal candidate to start off the innings.

If Quinton can continue on the same path for the next couple years we should see him at his very best in 2018. The sky’s the limit for this youngster.

David Miller

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50

David Miller is a hard hitting middle order batsman that coined the phrase ‘if it’s in the arc, it’s out of the park.’ Miller is still only 27 years old, but has been a port of the South African getup for about 5 years now. His role in the team can be described as a ‘finisher,’ his ability to come late in the innings and hit the ball crisply from ball one make him an ideal candidate for this job.

Miller has been short of form in the recent past but with a couple years to go until the 2018 ICC World T20 there should be plenty of time for Miller to get on track. Once again, do to Miller’s lower order batting position expect him to not be at the top of aggregate runs for his team, however his impact with quick cameos and match winning innings when his team falls into trouble should be expected.

Imran Tahir

T20I Bowling Record

Mat Inns Wkts BBI Ave Econ SR

While seam bowling has historically been the strength of the South African bowling line up the addition of Imran Tahir has given South Africa the added weapon of leg spin. Tahir is known for being a wily bowler with fantastic variations and the ability to spin the ball both ways. Tahir fairs especially well against right handers, thus keep an eye out teams packed with right handers, he should fare extremely well against them.

Tahir is a wicket taking bowler and thus sometimes bowls the odd loose delivery. His economy is not what the team has his in the squad for but rather his ability to take the wickets of top order batsmen.

Expect Tahir to do well in home conditions, using the bounce and pace of South African wickets to take a bundle of wickets and help his team make it far in the tournament.

The Sri Lankan T20 Team

sl

The Sri Lankan cricket team has been one of the strongest in international tournaments. Their ability to make the finals and semifinals of most world tournaments is well documented. The Sri Lankan T20 team was able to take home the trophy is 2016, after beating India in the finals.
Unfortunately the Sri Lankan team has undergone a large transformation with three of their most senior players retiring recently. The team is left with inexperienced youngsters who show talent but are still new to the big stage. Whether they will be ready for the ICC World T20 tournament in 2018 is still unknown.

What the Sri Lankans do posses are some good top order batsmen in the likes of of Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Janith Perera. Their captain and star player, Angelo Matthews is also a top performer for them who has been designated the role of finishing off innings for them.

The bowling line up of the Sri Lankan team is again quite inexperienced. Newcomers such as Amila Aponso promise much but only time can tell if he can continue his remarkable start to his career.

Sri Lanka will be underdogs going into this tournament, however they do have the capabilities to provide quite a few upsets and make the final stages of the tournament. Much will depend on how well the youngsters in the team acclimatize themselves to international cricket after this heavy rebuilding phase by the Sri Lankan team.

As the best player in the team, Matthews might be sent up the order during T20 matches to ensure he faces enough deliveries to make a serious impact on the game. Angelo hasn’t been in the greatest form as of late but with 2 years to go until the ICC World T20 there is plenty of time for him to get back to his best.

Over the past year Dinesh Chandimal has proven that he is the future of Sri lankan batting. This right handed wicket keeper batsman has consistently put up big scores and helped his team salvage a rebuilding period with a few wins. Now that the team is back on its feet somewhat, Chandimal should feel free to express himself at the crease and make the quick runs that we all know he is capable of.

Chandimal will most probably come one down in the Sri Lankan batting line up giving him plenty of deliveries to make a significant contribution. Much of Chandimal’s fate will be discovered when he faces up to fast bowling in South Africa next year, if he can survive the new ball he has a great chance of putting up some huge totals.

Expect Chandimal to be a standout performer for the Sri Lankans and a dark horse for one of the top run getters in the whole tournament.

Amila Aponso

Amila Aponso is only 23 years of age but has showed tremendous promise in the few games he’s played at the international level. While he is yet to play for his country in the T20 format his domestic record is terrific.

Aponso bowls with great control and a large amount of variation making him an extremely tough customer to contend with. After drastically improving in such a short career, what he can learn in the 2 years leading up to the ICC World T20 could be dramatic. Much will depend on his ability to keep his composure under the pressure of dominant international batsmen.

Look for Aponso to make a splash in the near future and then keep up his good work all the way into the 2018 World T20 tournament—potential is certainly in Sri Lanka’s favor.

Thisara Perera is a brawny all rounder balances out the Sri Lankan T20 side. His ability to hit the long ball is well known but his improvement in his bowling skills is what makes him such a valuable part of the team. Perera has long been part of the Sri Lankan unit but has got limited opportunities considering his batting position down the order and more senior bowlers getting a bulk of the bowling overs. Now however, with the beginning of a new chapter in Sri Lankan cricket Perera has the chance to really show what he’s capable of, while bowling his full quota of 4 overs and coming up the batting order on some occasion.

Perera plays in many of the T20 leagues around the world and has found great success in many of them. Expect him to play exceptionally well in Sri Lankan colors and pull off a few match winning performances.

New Zealand T20 Team

nz

For a long time the New Zealand team were considered underdogs going into world tournaments but they managed to make it far in most of them. It would be foolish to keep underestimating them, especially with the team they are currently playing.

New Zealand has especially taken to the limited overs forms of the game, making the finals in the World Cup in 2015 and winning most of their T20 matches in the following year. New Zealand has done exceptionally well in the 2016 season dropping only 2 matches and winning eight, beating powerhouse teams such as India, Australia and Pakistan on their way.
The New Zealand team now has plenty of options to choose from in both the batting and bowling departments. Top international batsmen such as Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill continue to perform amazingly well on the international stage and bowlers such as Trent Boult and Tim Southee always seem to follow suit. Another difference making factor that New Zealand possess is a drive to win and a competitive spirit that most other teams lack.

If South Africa is indeed the location of the T20 World Cup in 2018 the Kiwis will thoroughly enjoy the pace and bounce from the South African pitches. Much like their home conditions fast bowlers will thrive, as the new ball will be the demise of many opponents top order batsmen.

The Kiwi team has over achieved most of their international stint in cricket, now that they have all the pieces to the puzzle their team looks stronger than ever, all teams should beware facing up against the New Zealanders.

Probable Squad
Kane Williamson(c), Martin Guptill, Trent Boult, Luke Ronchi(wk), Mitchell Santner, Corey Anderson, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, BJ Watling, Mitchell McClenaghan, Colin Munro, Adam Milne,.

Kane Williamson

The captain of the New Zealand side, Kane Williamson, is also arguably their best batsmen. Williamson has been on an absolute tear in the past 3 years, cementing himself as one of the top 5 batsmen in the world. Williamson is currently ranked 7th by the ICC for T20 cricket with a rating of 719.

Williamson either opens the innings or comes 1 down in the New Zealand batting line up. He is known for being the anchor of the innings, attempting to face as many deliveries as possible and bat the whole innings giving his teammates the opportunity to score quickly around him.

Williamson is definitely one of the batsmen to look out for and possibly even bet on to be the top run scorer in the T20 World Cup in 2018. Expect him to make big runs and lead his team aggressively, which should lead to victories sending them into the second round.

Trent Boult

T20I Bowling Record

Mat Inns Wkts BBI Ave Econ SR

Trent Boult is one of the best proponents of swing bowling in the world. His ability to swing the ball into right handers and away from left handers with the new ball at the top of the innings is a thing of beauty. Boult has been able to hold over many of the world’s top batsmen and should continue to be a valuable asset on the seam friendly pitches in South Africa.

Boult generally bowls most of his overs in the first half of the innings thus his figures almost always end up economical. Look for Boult to have some big performances and really get into some of the lesser and affiliate teams. With his ability with the new ball, there is no telling how many wickets he’ll be able to take—it may even lead to him being atop the wickets column at the end of the tournament.

Martin Guptill

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
61 59 1806 101* 34.73 131.4 1 10

Where Williamson is the anchor of the innings, Guptill is in charge of giving the innings an impetus at the start. On his day Guptill can be destructive, with his ability to strike the ball cleanly and powerfully without giving the opposition any chances to get him out. Guptill is another batsman who is capable of topping the runs list in any given tournament.

Guptill always opens the innings for New Zealand and should be considered enemy number one by all teams that face New Zealand. If teams are unable to pick up his wicket before he gets himself in, they better get ready for some fireworks at the back end of the innings.
Guptill has always been a consistent performer for New Zealand, expect nothing less in the upcoming ICC World T20 in 2018.

England T20 Cricket Team

eng

The English Cricket team has made a resurgence in the limited overs formats in the past 3-4 years. This has mainly been due to a new aggressive mindset that English players have brought on. Players such as Jos Buttler and Joe Root have epitomized this mindset and given other players on the team the confidence to go after the opposition. With this new found aggression the English team has become a force to be reckoned with; almost winning the T20 World Cup in 2016 in a Finals that was lost due to last over heroics by Carlos Brathwaite of West Indies.

England will go into the 2018 ICC World T20 confident in their ability and another favorite to win the whole tournament. The team has had a good 2016 season with 5 wins and 4 losses. They rose to the occasion at the 2016 World T20 championship where they were able to topple, Sri Lanka, South Africa and even the New Zealanders on their way to the Finals.
Expect England to stay strong over the next couple of years and even add a few more T20 specialists to their lineup. With a strong seam bowling attack and an even stronger batting lineup England will be giving all the top teams trouble. Watch out for match winners with the bat such as Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler and Joe Root; their ability to finish off games is up there with the best in the world.

Joe Root

Joe Root has been in the form of his life over the past year or so. His batting in the 2016 ICC World T20 tournament was nothing short of spectacular with a number of matching winning innings that lead the English team to the Finals. Root is still young in his career which makes it even more remarkable that he could lead his team in such a mature manner.

Root is currently averaging around 40 runs in T20I cricket which is among the highest averages in the world. He is ranked number 5 in the ICC T20 rankings with a rating of 735. There is no doubt that Root will be the key to success for England in future T20 competitions, his bat may be the difference between making the playoffs and finding themselves stuck in the group stage of the 2018 Cup.

Expect Root to perform up to expectation on an individual level. His form seems to be never ending as he continues to amass runs in all formats of the game.

Jos Buttler

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50

Jos Buttler has been the other English batsman other than root who has been on absolute fire in the past year. Buttler came onto the scene with a bang, making a name for himself as the explosive finisher of England’s ODI innings. Buttler was then able to take that confidence and apply it to the T20 format where he has been able to dominate bowling line ups from lower down in the batting lineup. His ability to end innings with flurries of boundaries have made him the ideal finisher for England and an all round prized possession for the English team with his ability to also keep wickets.

Buttler will not get as many opportunities as other top batsmen but when he does come out expect him to score his runs extremely fast with a strike rate above the 150 mark. Once Buttler gets his eye in, he really can change the complexion of a match in a hurry.

Alex Hales

T20I Batting Record

Mat Inns Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
44 44 1220 116* 31.28 133.6 1 7

Alex Hales is the opening batsmen in the English T20 team, his record speaks for itself with an average above 30 and a strike rate in the mid 130’s. Hales has been especially clutch in big tournaments, scoring his only century in a huge chase against Sri Lanka and many of his 50’s in deciding matches in the T20 World Tournaments.

Hales gets the luxury of going after the bowling at the start of an innings with little pressure on him. This generally translates to greater time in the middle and thus more runs. Hales will be one of England’s wildcards in the upcoming tournament– if he pulls off some of his heroics he may be able to take England on his broad back into the playoffs.

The Pakistan T20 Team

pak

T20s have not been Pakistan’s strongest format of cricket, however they have managed to find some success in the recent past. Pakistan were able to steal a win from both Sri Lanka in New Zealand in the 2016 season leaving them with an overall record of 4-6. While this may not seem like a very successful record it is an improvement on past years.

The Pakistan T20 Cricket Team’s main weakness is the lack of quick scorers in the batting line up. The Pakistan bowling line up has been their strongest suit for the past two decades with many of their fast and spin bowlers going on to become all time greats. Ahamed Shehzad and Umar Akmal are two young bright spots in the Pakistani T20 batting woes—their ability to play aggressive cricket has given them an opportunity to make some big run chases and some surprise upsets in the recent past.

South African conditions will definitely suit their faster bowlers, however whether their batsmen will be able to handle the extra pace and bounce will left to be seen.
Look for Pakistan to hold their opponents to smaller scores with their dominant bowling lineup. If their batters can mature in the next couple of years and enter the 2018 tournament with confidence there might be hope for the Pakistanis pulling off a heist of the Trophy.

Probable Squad
Azhar Ali, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal(wk), Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Nawaz, Imad Wasim, Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Shafraz Ahmed, Yasir Shah, Umar Gul, Shoaib Malik, Sharjeel Khan, Sami Aslam, Ahmed Shehzad.

Ahmed Shehzad is an exciting young talent who opens the batting for the Pakistani side. Shehzad has shown his ability to hit boundaries but has been caught playing shots straight to fielders bringing up his dot ball count. If he works on his game and is able to start hitting the gaps there is no question that he will be a top notch player in the future.

Shehzad is likely to be one of the stand out performers in the Pakistani batting line up in the coming T20 World Cup. He already has a big hundred under his belt and has shown that he can take a good start with the bat and turn it into a big innings for his country.

Expect Shehzad to be the top scorer for Pakistan in the ICC World T20 2018, he will have every opportunity to impress opening the batting for a strong bowling side.

Mohammad Hafeez is a vital part of the Pakistani getup as he is the team’s fifth bowling option as well as opener. Hafeez has been extremely successful in bowling his accurate right arm off spinners at the start of the innings and then opening the innings with some creative batting.

Hafeez is currently ranked as 7 on the ICC T20 All Rounder list with a rating of 271. Generally if Hafeez is successful in both his batting and bowling the Pakistani side is tough to beat. His ability to hold batsmen down in the powerplay with his bowling and then do the exact opposite when he is given the bat at the start of the Pakistani innings sets the tone for the rest of the match.

Expect Hafeez to stay true to form and make a bunch of runs as well as take some key wickets at the top of the innings.

Umar Akmal

Even though Umar Akmal is only 26 years old it seems like he has been around the international cricketing scene for an eternity. Akmal burst onto the international scene oozing class, and drawing the highest praise from experts. His main flaw is his tendency to throw away his wicket after getting a start. This has left his career subpar based on the talent he has.

His fearlessness at the crease and his wide array of strokes give all viewers the impression that he is untouchable at the crease but momentary lapses in concentration have been his downfall in the past.

Recently Akmal seems to have matured and is making an effort to apply himself at the crease. With all the shots in the book Akmal will be a nightmare for bowlers if he can get his act together.

The next couple years keep a close eye on Akmal—his potential is as great as any player playing in world cricket at the moment.

Bangladesh T20 Cricket Team

ban

The Bangladeshi T20 cricket team has found success in the recent past. While the Bangladeshi team is relatively new to cricket it has made massive strides and finds itself competing well with the top teams in the world.

The Bangladesh team has been playing a lot of T20 cricket in the 2016 season and has been able to beat teams such as: Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands. Their record for 2016 is 7-8-1, which is very respectable given the opponents. With another two years to improve and prepare Bangladesh may well be in contention to make the playoffs in the World T20 2018.

The Bangladesh team is made of wily veterans and eager youngsters. There is no doubt that the infrastructure in Bangladesh has improved in respect to cricket and the country is churning out some extremely talented players. One exceptional young player that deserves special attention is Mustafizur Rahman. Rahman is only twenty years old but has stormed the T20 scene with his deceptive slower balls and skills with the new ball.
Top all rounder Shakib Al Hasan is a key figure in the Bangladeshi team. The team generally goes whichever direction Shakib is headed, when he is on song the Bangladeshi’s have a great chance to pull off some upsets.

Expect Bangladesh to knock off any of the top teams that are ill prepared for the tournament. This is not a team that can be taken lightly anymore.

Mustafizur Rahman is a twenty year old phenom who has the expectations of millions of Bangladeshis on his back. While there is no question that he has the talent that warrants this kind of attention it is hard predict what the pressure of a nation can do to a young talent.

Rahman doesn’t open the bowling for Bangladesh on most occasions but rather comes in a first change. He is best known for finishing off the innings in the death overs with his wonderful slower balls. Even knowing that it’s coming hasn’t seemed to help batsmen get a hold of the youngster’s slower deliveries.

If Mustafizur is able to handle the pressure he is expected to take a lot of wickets at the end of innings, especially against teams who haven’t come up against Bangladesh much in the past. There is still a level of mystery that surrounds young Mustafizur.

He is only behind Shahid Afridi of the Pakistan team who has recently retired from international cricket.Shakib should be on everyone’s list of players with utility. His ability to pick up wickets when needed and his creativity with the bat puts him amongst an elite set of all rounders. Tamim Iqbal has long been the top T20 batsman for the Bangladesh team. His ability to take advantage of the powerplay overs of a T20 match allow the Bangladeshis to get off to good starts in their innings and ensure they stay within striking distance in tough chases.Iqbal is a left hand timer of the ball known for taking the aerial route in the first few overs to take advantage of the fielding restrictions. Tamim has a T20I century under his belt, which few can brag about. If Bangladesh are to have any hope of making the playoffs Tamim is going to have to play out of his skin. He definitely has the talent and the temperament, all that he needs is a little bit of luck and a cool headed partner at the opposite end.Tamim is Bangladesh’s ticket out of the group stage– he will have to play a few match winning innings for them to advance.Affiliate T20 TeamsWhile the top 9 teams in the world dominate the playoffs the other 7 teams that make up the ICC World T20 2018 have a chance to strut their stuff and perhaps even provide the cricketing world with an upset or two. The teams to watch out for are:Afghanistan
The Afghan team has made a big impression in its still relatively young stage. The biggest win in their nation’s’ cricketing history came recently at the 2016 World T20 tournament where they were able to top the mighty West Indians in a group stage match. This was extremely impressive as the West Indians went on to win the tournament.Players such as Mohammad Shahzad and Mohammad Nabi have even been able to crack the ICC T20 rankings and place their name among the elite of the game. Expect more from these two players in particular the more they are exposed to T20 cricket with the top nations.Expect Afghanistan to qualify for the 2018 T20 Tournament and give every match their all. This team is likely to cause a couple upsets, it might not be a bad idea to take the huge odds of Afghanistan and bet on them to cause an upset!Zimbabwe
The Zimbabwean Cricket Team seems to have regained some of its former glory from the 90s. The new young team has a lot of potential and many young players who could turn out to be great players if they are given the requisite exposure.Look out especially for all rounder Elton Chigumbura and Sean Williams with the bat, both have the potential to have a breakout tournament. T20 cricket gives all players the opportunity to cut loose and play their natural game, it is under these conditions that many of the lesser teams flourish, let’s hope that Zimbabwe come to the 2018 tournament ready to play and express themselves.Ireland
The Irish have been able to put together a good cricket team in the past 5 years that have challenged the likes of many top cricketing nations. The Irish team was even able to topple the English team in a World Cup ODI fixture which is their best result to date.Players such as Kevin O’Brien and Ed Joyce have great potential, especially in the T20 game where aggression in batmen is a needed quality. Kevin O’Brian in particular has the ability to hit the long ball with ease, even against some of the better bowlers in the world.Much like the Afghans and Zimbabweans, expect the Irish to be extremely competitive in their matches and perhaps even cause an upset. All teams that face the Irish should make sure they don’t take this team lightly.
