Twenty20 Cricket

Twenty20 or T20 cricket is a relatively new form of the game that was originally introduced by the English Cricket Board in the early 2000’s as a new and exciting version of cricket. From humble beginnings the game has now developed into a multi-billion dollar sport that’s played in dozens of leagues throughout the world.

The T20 game has also found its way to the international cricket circuit with even a T20 World Cup being held bi-annually. Many have accredited the game’s rise to fame, with the quick and action packed nature of T20 cricket, which is so different to the longer 50 over and Test match versions of the game. Fans are provided with more excitement with smaller grounds bringing forth more runs in the form of 4s and 6ers.

T20 cricket has changed the landscape of the cricketing world and continues to bring in huge crowds and interest, even in nations where cricket is not normally watched. T20 has found itself in the amazing position of being the perfect vehicle from which the game to go global with. With so much promise, the IPL and the T20 cricket game has a lot to live up to each year, fortunately they have the help of billions of cricket fans all over the world helping them maintain the success they have created.

Rules for IPL

A typical Twenty20 game is completed in about three hours, this is much shorter than the one-day game which last 6-7 hours and the test matches which can last up to five days. It is similar to the 50 over game however, in the sense that each team bats for one innings each. The team that scores more runs wins the match.

T20 Rules

    1. Like in 50 over cricket each bowler may bowl a maximum of only one-fifth of the total overs per innings. Thus, for a twenty over match the maximum number of overs a bowler may bowl is 4.
    2. If a bowler delivers a no ball by overstepping the popping crease(the white line across the pitch at each end of the pitch), it costs the team 1 run and his next delivery is designated a “free-hit”.
    3. During a free hit a player cannot be dismissed via any dismissal option other than a run out.
    4. In the IPL, strategic timeouts are taken by both teams during each innings. One must be taken by the bowling team between the 6th and 10th overs, and one by the batting team between the 11th and 16th overs.

Fielding Restrictions

  1. The maximum number of fielder on the leg side at any time is 5.
  2. During the first six overs of each innings, a maximum of two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. These 6 overs are known as the powerplay.
  3. After the first six overs, a maximum of five fielders can be outside the fielding circle.

IPL Team Rules

The IPL has a few rules that are specific to the formation of teams in the tournament:

  1. Each team is formed with 11 players from which a maximum of 4 players can be foreign. All players who are not Indian are considered to be foreign players. A squad may have a maximum of 10 foreign players to choose their playing XI from.
  2. A minimum squad strength of 16 players, one physiotherapist and a coach is required to form an IPL team.
  3. A minimum of 14 Indian players must be included in each squad.
  4. A minimum of six players from the BCCI under-22 pool must be included in each squad.

IPL Odds and Royal Challengers Bangalore

rcb

The Royal Challengers Bangalore are one of the 8 original teams featured from the first IPL. The team has been consistent over the years, making 3 finals in the 9 editions but are yet to lift the IPL Trophy. The team came extremely close in the 2016 season, returning to the finals and falling to the Sunrisers Hyderabad by only 8 runs in the Finals. Captain Virat Kohli definitely has the passion and desire to win the IPL, it is now just a matter of harnessing the tremendous talent on the team to form consistent wins in high pressure matches.RCB have built a great team with one of the most feared batting line ups of all time. Having the likes of Chris Gayle, AB De Villiers and Virat Kohli all on the same batting card has the potential to give any bowler nightmares. The performance of these three batsmen in particular over the past few IPL seasons has brought RCB perilously close to holding the title.
The Royal Challengers team is known for their great ability to chase down huge targets. With a loaded batting line up, filled with expert finishers such as Kohli and De Villiers, no target is safe from this team– RCB have been known to regularly chase down target in excess of 200 runs with relative ease.RCB go into the 2017 season as a favourite to take it all, but as with every year they must play one match at a time not getting ahead of themselves to ensure a path to the playoff stage.

Home Ground

The home ground of the Royal Challengers is the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Formerly known as the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stadium the Chinnaswamy is located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The seating capacity of the stadium is 35,000.The Chinaswammy is known as a very high scoring ground due to the high altitude of the stadium mixed with the very small boundaries and flat pitch. This type of ground is custom made for the RCB as their batting line up if arguably the most powerful in the IPL. Bowlers generally have a hard time picking up wickets and stemming the flow of runs in Bangalore, however the Chinaswammy does give great bowlers the opportunity to separate themselves from the pack if they have the requisite skills.

RCB Roster

While the teams are not set in stone for the 2017 season some players are very likely to be retained by RCB due to past exploits.

Kohli is not only the Captain of the RCB team but also the heart and soul of the batting line up, playing anchor to his team’s innings most of the time.Expect nothing less than a repeat performance from Virat in the 2017 season, if he keeps his lofty standards you should be seeing the Royal Challengers Bangalore back in the Finals.

AB De Villiers

Arguably the most talented batsmen in the world at the moment, AB De Villiers makes batting against the top bowlers in the world look like a piece of cake. Known as Mr. 360, AB has the ability to flay the ball to any part of the ground with any angle of attack. There really is no safe place to bowl to this all-time great when he is in the mood.De Villiers is known as one of the best finishers of an innings in the world, with his great talent to hit boundaries almost at will. De Villiers acts as a makeshift wicket keeper for the RCB and is a tremendous fielder when not donning the gloves.De Villiers is a contemporary cricketing great and RCB should consider themselves lucky to have such a stacked batting line up in this day and age.

Mitchell Starc

T20 Bowling Record

Relatively young at 26 years of age, Mitchell Starc is the premier fast bowler in the world today—many would argue that he is the premier bowler in the world, period. Since the ICC World Cup in 2015, for which he was Man of the Tournament, Starc has been on an absolute tear. The only thing standing in his way seems to be his own health which kept him from competing fully in last year’s IPL.Starc’s ability to swing the new ball at speeds well above 140 km/ph and come back with the old ball to bowl toe crushing yorkers in the death of an innings gives RCB a rare wicket taking option on flat pitches.Starc is fully healthy now and from his performances in recent games for Australia in International Cricket, he seems to be well on his way to dominating the game again. Look out for Starc’s name at the top of the purple cap board next year.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Sunrisers Hyderabad are a new team to the IPL, created after the Hyderabad based Deccan Chargers were terminated by the IPL. The team made an appearance in the IPL playoffs in its first season in 2013 IPL and is the current reigning IPL champions. The franchise is owned by Kalanithi Maran of the Sun TV channel Network. The Sunrisers are known for having a well balanced team with several top international players as well as some of the best talent India has to offer. The explosive top order batting consisting of David Warner and Yuvraj Singh coupled with the stingy fast bowling unit made up of young talented pacemen, Mustafizur Rahman and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as well as elderly statesman Ashish Nehra. Bangladeshi fast bowler, Mustafizur Rahman in particular impressed last season winning the emerging player of the season award. The team is currently captained by Australian batsman David Warner and coached by Tom Moody. With two experienced and aggressive Australians at the helm, expect this team to make the top 4 again and perhaps even repeat as 2017 champions.

Home Ground

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad is considered the home ground of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The stadium has a capacity of 55,000 and is rated by many as one of the best stadiums in India. The pitch at the Rajiv Ghandi Stadium seems to be a one that agrees with all players. Batsmen who like the ball coming onto the bat will thrive in the conditions, however skilled fast bowlers may also get some swing and seam movement with the right skills.

David Warner is the Captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He leads from the front as a left- handed destructive opening batsman who is known for taking bowling line ups apart. He was the second highest run getter in the 2016 season, only behind Virat Kohli, with his 848 runs at an average of 60 with a strike rate above 150.Warner has been performing on the main stage for years now both in Leagues all over the world and in Australian International Cricket. His form with the bat has now extended for years and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Warner enjoys batting in pressure situations and playing match winning innings for his team. Expect more great things from Warner in the coming 2017 season, with his name as always, close to the top for the orange cap.

The Bangladeshi ace fast bowler is only 20 years old, showing tremendous promise and amazing composure for at such a young age. In his short IPL career Rahman has been able to give everyone a glimpse of his talent, dismissing and bamboozling some of the world’s best batsmen. His amazingly deceptive slower balls in the death overs of innings have been exceptionally hard to score off of, making Mustafizur a rare commodity in the current trend of T20 cricket. Mustafizur is the type of bowler every team requires; a wicket taking bowler, who can be a match winner on his day.The left-armer was able to win the merging player of the season in the 2016 edition of the IPL and has found continued success in his international career for his country, Bangladesh. After gaining another years of experience expect Rahman to have another effective campaign at the Indian Premier League 2017.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh is an explosive left hand batsman that has the ability to take over a game if he gets himself in. Yuvraj has found himself as the middle order anchor on the Sunrisers team, finishing innings with elegance and flare that only Yuvraj is capable of.While Yuvraj’s batting average and high score may not be that impressive, his ability to hit timely boundaries at the end of matches is nothing to look past. Yuvraj is at the back end of his career but is still capable of making huge contributions when necessary.Yuvraj is also well known for turning his arm over with some slow left arm spin. His golden arm has taken timely wickets when his team has needed it the most, making him an essential part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad.Don’t count Yuvraj out in the 2017 IPL season, he may not be at his prime but his contribution could be the difference between a winning and losing season for the Sunrisers.

The boundaries and lightning fast outfield at the Wankhede Stadium are also on the smaller side, making for high scores and big chases.Only the most skilled fast bowlers will be able to get anything from the Wankhede pitch, and usually the spinners fair worse—the Wankhede really is a batsman’s paradise.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is both the Captain of the Mumbai Indians as well as the leading run scorer. Sharma has transformed himself from a youngster full of talent to a consistent top performer in the IPL. There was no questions to the capabilities of Sharma, however Sharma has been found lacking in the application department during the early parts of his career. Today, Sharma is the opening batsman for the Indian National Team and an integral part of their batting line up.Sharma will continue to be the star batsmen on Mumbai Indians for the foreseeable future. His ability to play the big match winnings innings makes him a threat to take the match away from any team. If Sharma is able to cover up a few technical flaws and keep his concentration while batting he will be sure to be one of the top five runs scorers in the 2017 IPL.

Lasith Malinga

Malinga the ‘slinger’ is a Sri Lankan born fast bowler known for his awkward arm action and ability to bowl consistent and deadly Yorkers. He made a name for himself in the first few IPL seasons, often finding himself at the top of the wicket leader board.Malinga has now retired from international cricket and directs all his attention to the shorter format of the game. He has been a consistent contender for the purple cap and the same is expected from him for years to come. While players are less perplexed by his action nowadays, his accuracy remains to be hard for batsman to deal with.Malinga has dropped a few clicks in pace in the recent past but as long as Malinga keeps up his fitness regime and keeps up his amazing bowling control, Malinga should find himself amongst the top bowlers in the 2017 edition of the IPL.

Kieron Pollard is a destructive lower order all rounder who is also handy with the ball. Pollard made a name for himself in the IPL four years back when he won matches for the Mumbai Indians from seemingly impossible positions.

Pollard is also one of the best fielders on show at the IPL, with explosive speed and an extra safe pair of hands few balls get past the West Indian. Pollard’s bowling has become less apart of his game in the past few seasons but he continues to take timely wickets when the Captain puts the ball in his hands.

Expect a few match winning performances from Pollard in the 2017 season. There is always a chance to win a match with Pollard at the crease.

Delhi Daredevils

Print

The Delhi Daredevils are another one of the 8 teams which has been with IPL for all its seasons. The Daredevils are owned by the GMR Group of India. Despite making it to the finals and topping the league stages twice the Delhi Daredevils have had no success in bringing home a IPL Trophy. In the most recent years of the IPL the Daredevils has gone through a restructure in team which has led to a few disappointing seasons.
The team’s current captain is Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan while the coach and mentor are Paddy Upton and Rahul Dravid respectively. The Delhi team will be looking to make some big pickups in the coming IPL auction to help strengthen their weak batting line up. Look for them to jump on any top class batsman available, even if the price tag is a big one.

Home Ground

The home ground to the Delhi Daredevil team is the Feroz Shah Kotla cricket ground located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi. Alternatively, the Dearedevils sometimes play at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

Both grounds are known for assisting spinners, however the Feroz Shah Kotla has in the recent years become a high scoring venue, with the ball coming onto the bat. The Delhi Daredevils have found it hard to find a winning combination for their home grounds with their bowling line up being one of the most expensive in the IPL. The lack of quality batsmen has also been a big reason for the decline of the Delhi team.

Quinton De Kock

The South African Wicket Keeper is one of the top young talents in the world at the moment. Already recognized as a lethal opening batsman at the age of 23, De Kock continues to impress selectors and critics with his mature batting performances. His ability to convert smaller scores into big hundreds is up there with the best players in the world.
With De Kock the Daredevils also have a trustworthy wicket-keeper. His skills behind the stumps have improved over the years to the point where he is now considered one of the top wicket keepers going around in international cricket.
Don’t be surprised at all if Quinton ends up at the top of the runs board in the 2017 IPL—he definitely has the talent, it’s all about whether he can convert it to performance.

Imran Tahir

T20 Bowling Record

Another South African overseas player, Imran Tahir is a right arm leg spinner. Imran Tahir has become one of the leading spinners in the world and continues to build a reputation for himself in a South African team that has long been known for its pace bowlers.

Tahir may bowl the odd bad ball but his ability to take wickets is what makes him so effective. Tahir boasts a wide variety of variations with a top googly that has fooled some of the better batsman in the world. Expect Tahir to tighten up his line and length in the 2017 IPL edition and really put the pressure on the batsmen. With a few pitches that are conducive to spin you may find Tahir contending for the purple cap.

JP Duminy

T20 Batting Record

Yet another South African player, JP Duminy is one of the top middle order batsmen on display at the IPL. Originally known for being a great nudger and nurdler of the cricket ball, Duminy has stepped up his game in the T20 version of the game to incorporate big hitting.
JP will always be known for his classy and orthodox cricket shots but his ability to improvise is now a big part of his batting game. His ability to bowl handy off spinners is also a big plus for any team that he plays for. He can easily bowl out a quota of 4 overs when need be, especially in spin friendly conditions. You might not find JP in the race for the orange cap due to his low place in the Delhi batting line up but expect him to play some match winning innings when his team is down and out.

Kolkata Knight Riders

kkr

The Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the more successful teams in the IPL. KKR owned by the Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan in partnership with actress Juhi Chawla and her spouse Jay Mehtha. After a rough start to the IPL, consistently finding themselves at the bottom of the table, KKR have been able to capture the IPL title twice in three years. The Knight Riders won the IPL trophy in both in 2012, by defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final and in 2014, defeating Kings XI Punjab. KKR also holds the record for the longest winning streak in IPL history with 14 wins on the trot. The brand value of the Kolkota Knight Riders was estimated at $86 million in 2015, which is the highest valuation amongst all eight teams currently playing in the IPL.Kolkata is currently placed in the middle of the teams vying for the IPL title. While they were able to squeak into the playoffs in the 2016 season they didn’t put up much of a fight in their eliminator match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Home ground

The Kolkata Knight Riders have arguably the most iconic ground in the IPL, the Eden Gardens. Eden Gardens is known for holding a massive 66,000 people, creating one of the most deafening and electric atmospheres in competitive sports.Eden Gardens has always been a low scoring venue favoring spinners and slower bowlers. Scores are generally under the 160 or 8 an over mark. Batting requires much more patience and expertise rather than brute strength. High scores have been made in Kolkata, they have been few and far in between however.

Sunil Narine

T20 Bowling Record

Sunil Narine is one of the top spinners in the world. He came onto the IPL scene with a bang, tricking many of the world’s top players with his unorthodox deliveries. Even now, years after the mystery has been uncovered Narine is able to take a bundle of wickets with his great control and ability to spin the ball a huge amount.

Narine has been helped over the years by the pitch at Eden Gardens. Playing half his games on a spin friendly track has given Narine some unbelievable IPL stats. Betting on Narine to have economical statistics is one of the easiest bets for a sport better to make, the only question is how low.

As per usual expect Narine to take a bunch of wickets and hold batsmen to less than a run a ball.

While batting may not be easy at Eden Gardens Russell has found a way to be effective at the end of innings, blitzing opponents with boundaries. Russell is also one of the most athletic fielders in world cricket– his amazing speed allows him to cover ground that few players can.

Betters should make sure they don’t overlook Andre Russell when it comes to prop bets for biggest sixers and fastest fifties.

Kings XI Punjab

kxl

The Kings XI Punjab have been part of the IPL from 2008. The team is jointly owned leading Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, the Wadia Group, Dabur’s Mohit Burman and Karan Paul. The team has been one of the weaker performers out of the original 8 teams and has been unable to capture the IPL Trophy.

The only years the Kings XI were able to make it out of the group stage were in the inaugural IPL back in 2008 and their top performance from all 9 seasons, when they came runners-up in 2014.

The Kings XI are known for carrying a number of Australian players who make up a majority of the overseas contingent of their team. Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and David Hussey we’re the heroes of their 2014 season amassing a vast majority of Kings XI’s runs with the bat. Unfortunately, with the decline in form of some of their star players the team went on a downward spiral, culminating in a bottom of the table finish in 2016.

Kings XI Punjab still have the necessary pieces to perform and win at the highest level, whether their team will be able to play to its best ability will be left to be seen.

Home Ground

The Kings XI Punjab team play most of its games at the PCA stadium in Mohali but also have the odd fixture at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, in the picturesque Dharamsala as well. The PCA stadium has been found to be inconsistent in terms of pitches producing, low slow spin friendly pitches as well as absolute flat belters.

The ground at Dharamsala is unique as it is situated at an altitude of 1,457 m above sea level. The high altitude make the ball travel further when hit into the air, giving the Himachal Pradesh Stadium the ability to produce extremely high scoring games averaging 180 runs per an innings.

Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell made a name for himself in the 2014 edition of the IPL with his explosive middle order batting which helped Kings XI Punjab make it to the top of the IPL Points Table. Unfortunately, Maxwell hasn’t found the same magic in the following seasons, having an extremely sub-par season in 2016 and even being dropped from the side during the latter half of the tournament.

There is no doubt that Maxwell has the talent to dominate the IPL, his high risk high reward method of batting gives bowlers the chance to get him out but also gives him the chance to dominate bowling attacks if found on song.

Maxwell almost took home the orange cap back in 2014, after great international performances for Australia in the recent past– don’t be surprised if his name is found up there once again.

David Miller

T20 Batting Record

Matches Innings Runs Average SR 100s 50s

The big hitting David Miller is known for coming up with the phrase ‘if it’s in the arc, it’s out of the park’ and has backed up his statement with countless match winning performance for the Kings XI Punjab. The South African youngster has grown in stature over the years and is now considered a senior player in the Kings XI ranks.

Like most of the team he has been in a slump in the past couple seasons but has still been able to come up with the odd breath taking innings. Miller is way too good a player to be out of form for a significant period of time, look for him to make a comeback in a big way in the Indian Premier League 2017.

Best Bets and IPL Odds

  • High scoring matches in Dharamsala
  • Glenn Maxwell for fastest 50 or fastest 100 of the tournament.
  • Kings XI- making the playoffs in Indian Premier League 2017

Gujarat Lions

lions

The Gujarat Lions are one of the new teams which made their debut in the 2016 IPL season. It is a temporary franchise that will be playing in the Indian Premier League 2017 due to the suspensions of the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. The franchise is owned by Index Technologies.

The franchise has a fantastic debut in its first IPL, able to top the league stages of the tournament. Unfortunately, the Lions weren’t able to capitalize on their great group stage, due to two losses in the playoffs stage that knocked them out of the tournament at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bangalore and eventual champions, the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Gujarat Lions team is made up a good blend of attacking batsmen both local and overseas, as well as a top bowling line up consisting of a balance of both pace and spin options.

The Lions have only played one season, so it is yet unknown if they can keep up the lofty standards they set in the 2016 season, however with the team they have now they will be expected to make the playoffs again.

Home Ground

The Gujarat Lions played most of their home games at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, in Rajkot and held a couple of fixtures at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Both grounds are good for batting but also have something in it for the bowlers.

Dwayne Bravo and Amit Mishra were able to use both tracks to good effect and ended up amongst the top wicket takers in the 2016 season. Look for the trend to continue, with top batting picking up a large amount of runs and top bowling picking up a bundle of wickets.

The West Indian all-rounder has found himself on winning teams throughout his career, this is no coincidence. His ability with both the bat and ball is well documented, with a purple cap to his name and many match winnings innings in the middle order– Dwayne Bravo has cemented himself as a top IPL performer.

Formerly part of the now suspended Chennai Super Kings, Bravo was instrumental in leading his team to multiple IPL titles. Bravo’s use of slower balls at the end of an innings has been his most productive source of wickets. There is no doubt Dwayne Bravo will continue to perform at a high level in the coming Indian Premier League 2017, make sure you don’t underestimate his contributions when making bets.

Captain of the Gujarat Lions, Suresh Raina has always one of the most talented T20 batsmen in the world. His ability to effortless flay the ball to all parts of the ground has found him a consistent place in the Indian National Team in the limited overs variations of the game.
Raina is a former member of the Chennai Super Kings and is that team’s leading run getter. Raina has yet to have that one break out season where he takes the orange cap but the possibility of this occurring is never that improbable. Raina has never missed an IPL match due to injury or any other circumstances, making him a great pick for aggregate runs. Expect Raina to live up to his hype in the next IPL and perhaps even over perform.

Rising Pune Supergiants

sg

The other temporary team in the IPL, the Rising Pune Supergiants, are based in Pune, Maharashtra. The franchise is owned by Sanjiv Goenka-led New Rising. The team is Captained by Indian Great, MS Dhoni and coached by none other than ex New Zealand player Stephen Fleming.

The Supergiants had a relatively quiet 2016 season finding it difficult, unlike the other temporary team the Gujarat Lions, to find winning team combination. What the Pune Supergiants seem to be lacking is experience in the bowling department. This lack of experience has led to Pune being one of the most expensive bowling line ups in the IPL and conceding far too many boundaries.

IPL 2017 will be a stage for the Supergiants to redeem themselves with a more gelled team. With Dhoni at the helm and players like Mitchell Marsh and Thisara Perera hungry to show the world what they are made of, look out for this team in the future.

Home Ground

The home ground to the Rising Pune Supergiants is the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium located at Gahunje near Pune. The ground is known for being low scoring and favorable to slower bowlers, although in last years’ edition of the IPL the pitch played much better than usual.

Look for spinners to continue to enjoy bowling at the Maharashtra and for the scores to be on the lower side between 140-170. Also expect batsman who play spin well to enjoy the conditions and make a lot of runs where others may struggle.

Usman Khawaja was one of the few bright spots for the Pune Supergiants in the 2016 IPL season. In a season where nothing much went right for them Khawaja was able to consistently make runs as an opening batsman, impressing most with his cool temperament and ability to handle the new ball with ease. Khawaja first made an impression in the T20 format in the Australian Big Bash League where he was top run scorer for the tournament.

The Australian left hander is still new to international cricket and continues to grow every year. There is no doubt he is a player for the future and keeping a keen eye on him should result in some easy prop bets with good odds in the future. Expect Usman to be the top run getting for the Pune Supergiants franchise.

Mitchell Marsh is fast becoming one of the best all-rounders in the game. Marsh is a great bowler, creating some genuine pace and swing with the new ball. He is also a huge asset lower down the batting order with his ability to accelerate an innings with his big hitting.

Marsh is still young but shows a lot of promise both in the IPL and in his short but prosperous International Cricket career. The Australians regard him as one of their top young prospects and it would be foolish to think otherwise. Expect Marsh to become one of the best all-rounders that have played the T20 format, just give him a little time- 2017 could be his year.
